The Peterborough Royal Foxhound Show is held today as part of The Festival of Hunting and is the major event in its field in the world. When a pack wins at Peterborough it is an accolade to be treasured in that Hunt’s history forever.

The judges of the Old English Hound Classes for the day were E Foster Esq and T J E Coulson Esq, MFH.

The Percy hounds were placed in all but one of the six classes contested by nine packs of Old English Hounds at The Show held on Wednesday 20 July 2016 on for us the hottest day of the year.
It was very pleasing to have all three of our Masters present to see the results and to have them all join us for lunch.

In the first class of the day for a Single Unentered Dog Hound the Percy showed Aragon and litter brothers Spender and Spokesman. Spokesman took the judges eye and duly went on to win the class. He was walked by our amateur whip, Allan Morris and is by Gamble ’10 and out of Speedwell ’08.

In the next class for the Best Couple of Entered Hounds the Percy came second with Allbury who is by Spitfire ’08 and out of Alaska ’10 (both previous Peterborough Champions) and Pompous who is by Woolem ’09 and out of Poet ’10. Pompous was walked by Aimée Straughan.

Next was the Best Stallion Hound Class, where both Clinker and Porrick were shown, both by Spitfire ’08, Clinker did not take the judges eye but Porrick did and duly came second in the class. Porrick is out of Poem ’11 and was walked by Lynnn Walker, one of our longest standing puppy walkers.

The Dog Hound Championship followed with Spokesman the winner of the Unentered Class and  Allbury and Pompous, second in the Entered Couple Class all put forward. Hounds placed in a couple class going forward as they are then judged separately in a Championship. After a lot of deliberating by the judges with a ring of approximately ten hounds, Allbury, to my delight, was pronounced Champion.

This is the third year in succession that the Percy has won this Championship and the ninth Peterborough Championship they have won at Peterborough in eleven years. Credit must be given both to our puppy walkers and to our Masters for the breeding of the hounds. Altogether this was the thirty eighth Championship that the Percy has won in my eleven years as huntsman.

After lunch the Bitch Hound Classes commenced. In the first class for the Best Unentered Bitch, Landlady, Popadom and Spendthrift were all put forward. Only Spendthrift, a litter sister to Spokesman, by Gamble ’10 and out of Speedwell ’08 caught the judges eye and she finished fourth. Spendthrift was also walked by Allan Morris.

In the next class for the Best Entered Couple of Bitches neither couple put forward had any luck at all.

In the final class of the day for the Best Brood Bitch, Lightning by Spitfire ’08 out of Linnet ’08 and Posie by Woolem ’09 and out of Porridge ’05 were put forward with Posie finishing third and Lightning fourth. Posie was walked by Aimée Straughan and Lightning by my parents.

Another successful day making the 2.30am start and round trip of five hundred miles very worthwhile. Thanks go to Allan Morris and Ben Lambert for their help with the hounds all day and to my mother and her band of helpers for once again a superb lunch.
