The Percy hounds five hundred mile round trip to Blaston in Leicestershire on Sunday 28 June was again worthwhile. The journey home however was long and tedious with a two hour traffic jam in the diversion due to the A1 being closed between Newark and Retford. Having left the showground just before 3pm we didn't expect to return to Alnwick at 9pm! A very long day.

Blaston is a very well organised friendly show with the Old English classes being held in the morning and the Modern classes in the afternoon.  The judges for the Old English Classes were Mr Patrick Martin (Recently retired huntsman of the Bicester with Whaddon Chase) and Mr John Holliday (Belvoir huntsman). Baily's Hunting Directory again very kindly sponsored the Old English Classes. There were eight packs of Old English hounds present at the show to give a good level of competition.

In the first class, Single Unentered Dog, we showed Poacher, walked by Mrs Lynn Walker, and Pompous, walked by Miss Aimée Straughan. Poacher was third with Pompous fourth.

The next class was the Couple of Entered Dog Hounds, we showed a couple of dogs that we have not shown before as a couple, Porrick, walked by Mrs Lynn Walker and Porter, walked by Miss Emily Bennett. We were very pleased as they won the class.

In the Stallion Hound Class we again showed two hounds we have not shown before, Lifter, walked by my parents and Portable, walked by Mrs Annette Hewitt, but on this occasion they did not catch the judges eye.

We put our winning Dog Hound Couple in the Championship of Porrick and Porter, where Porrick went on to be Reserve Champion for the second year running just being pipped by Hurworth Corporal.

The bitch Hound Classes followed, in the Single Unentered Bitch class we showed Pomegranate, walked by Mrs Lynn Walker, and Polka, walked by the Morris Family, but unfortunately they did not catch the judges eye.

The next class, the Couple of Entered Bitch Hounds, we showed, Lightening, walked by my parents and Pocket, walked by Miss Emily Bennett. The judges were impressed with this couple, who again we have not shown together before and they went on to win the class.

In the last class of the morning, the Brood Bitch Class, we showed Limit, walked by Mrs Lynn Walker and Posie, walked by Miss Aimée Straughan, Limit came second in the class.

We took our winning couple of bitch hounds, Lightening and Pocket, and Limit into the Bitch Hound Championship where Limit went on to be Reserve Champion just being pipped by the North Staffordshire brood bitch.
